Friday Night Band Concerts
THERE'S MUSIC IN THE AIR
Concerts on the Village Green
Every Friday evening from the end of June through the end of August, Chatham Band puts on a free concert in Kate Gould Park on Main Street, just next door to the Wayside Inn. Have dinner at Wild Goose Tavern here at the hotel, then stroll over to hear the music!
The band got its start in 1931 as the American Legion Band, with a core group of 12 members plus some area musicians. After a few years, they moved to a new hall belonging to the Improved Order of Red Men, which is when they changed their name to Chatham Band and adopted their signature red uniforms. They had to disband temporarily due to World War II, but since the late 1940s Chatham Band has been performing free concerts at Gould Park.
Today the band performs classics like Moon River, patriotic songs, medleys from musicals, movie themes such as Star Wars Saga and the James Bond Theme, songs for children like The Bunny Hop and Disney tunes, as well as sing-a-longs like YMCA and Sweet Caroline.
Concerts are free and open to the public. They begin at 8 PM and last about 1.5 hours. Shows are weather-permitting. Should inclement weather occur, Chatham Band will make a decision about cancellation at 5 PM and will post it on their website.
What to Bring
Bring your blankets and your lawn chairs for seating. Chatham evenings can be cool, so you might want to pack a sweatshirt.
Picnics are welcome. No refreshments will be sold within the park, but look for vendors just outside the park, or check out one of the area eateries.
As always during the summer, parking in Chatham is tricky. On band concert nights, additional traffic restrictions and extra parking go into effect. You’re encouraged to come early and/or to walk if possible. For more parking information, visit the Chatham Band website.
"Google says 3 star hotel, but it definitely deserves more than that. Staff was welcoming and inviting, Great service at their restaurant (Wild Goose Tavern), perfect location and the place was very clean. I felt very comfortable staying at the Wayside during COVID, and can't wait to go back.
(I stayed back in September, 2020)"
