When Samuel de Champlain sailed into what is now Wellfleet Harbor in 1606, he called the area Port aux Huitres—the "Port of Oysters." The Wellfleet Oyster Shuck-Off is billed by organizers as the largest oyster-shucking competition in North America. Competitors race to shuck 24 oysters, but winning isn't simply about speed. Presentation matters too, with penalties possible for damaged oysters, broken shells and other mistakes.
For 2026, preliminary competition is scheduled for Saturday from 1:00–3:00 PM, with the finals Sunday from 1:00–3:00 PM. The champion receives a $3,000 cash prize and earns the opportunity to compete in the National U.S. Oyster Shucking Championship Contest.
